New Trash Cans Arrive at the End of Driveways

Residents of Londonderry will soon be  lugging a new container to the bottoms of their driveways. This week, the town's new waste management company delivered approximately 7,300 square, plastic trash barrels.

Doris Beatty, the town's environmental engineer, said last week that the town's new trash company, Allied Waste Services, had begun delivering the 65-gallon containers.

With approximately 800 to 1,000 cans being dropped off at homes each day, Beatty expected the job to be completed by the end of this week.

Despite the new arrival of cans, residents will have another week to get used to the new system. Beatty said she would like resident to begin using the cans immediately, but if they also put out their old can, the town will empty it through the week of Aug. 3

Early this year, the Londonderry Town Council approved a $1.3 million contract with Allied Waste Services for solid waste disposal and recycling services. The company began collecting trash in Londonderry at the start of the new fiscal year on July 1, although the arrival of the new trash barrels has been delayed by a few weeks.

Although controversial among some residents, the five-year solid waste removal contract is expected to save the town $200,000 annually in solid waste collection and $3,000 annually in the recycling program.

Public Works Director Janusz Czyzowski said earlier this year that he expected the savings to extend to the town's Environmental Services budget as well, in the expectation that the new program would encourage greater recycling.

Under the new program, each household in Londonderry will receive a 65-gallon, square plastic trash barrel. On trash day, a truck owned by Allied Waste Services will pick up and empty the trash barrel via a machine-operated arm.

In order for the machine to function properly, containers must be at least 3 feet away from any other object (such as a mailbox, light post or parked car), and no more than 8 feet away from the edge of the pavement.

For families with six people or more living in one home or families with medical conditions that produce a considerable amount of solid waste, a second 65-gallon trash barrel can be applied for. Beatty said she expected approximately 100 additional cans to be delivered to homes that either received the waiver or paid for a second trash barrel.

The price for a second 65-gallon barrel is $200 for the first 12 months and $150 for all of the subsequent years.

Residents can also opt for a second 32-gallon trash barrel for $150 for the first 12 months and $105 for subsequent years.

As of last week, 94 homes had requested only a 32-gallon container instead of the regular 65-gallon one.

"These are people with smaller homes," said Beatty, who encouraged others to downgrade to the 32-gallon container too. "They didn't want the bulk of the larger barrel."

Sometime in the early fall, Beatty said she expected the town to set up a collection day for old trashcans at the drop-off center off West Road. The town will recycle the old trash barrels.

Many families in Londonderry are not accustomed to reducing their trash to only one trash barrel each week. Via recycling and composting, residents can cut down on the amount of their solid waste, program officials said.

For the occasional special event, however, 30-gallon trash bags will be available for sale at the town hall for $3 per bag.

Ironic.....a new policy put in place to increase the amount of recycling.....and it generates waste!

I bought a $3 overflow bag, and the unnecessarily cumbersome process of doing so generates THREE pieces of 8 1/2 x 11 paper! 

I figured I'd walk in, hand someone my money, be handed a bag, and leave.
Nooooo....
Fill out a form (why are they tracking who buys the bags??)
Take the form and pay the Town Clerk, who generates two more pages:
         A receipt to take to Solid Waste to show I paid.
         A receipt for me - why?

So silly.  But sadly, typical.

MJM, after 8 days of vacation in Orlando a question has finally been answered "Where is Dopey?"

It seems he transferred to a cooler climate and is now in charge of the $3 bag counter.   Sad
