Your role in the budget process

It's that time of year again | budget season. Along with the colder temperatures associated with the approach of winter, the annual town and school budget discussion is actively under way. All Londonderry residents are strongly encouraged to take part in the process.

Each year at about this time, the Town Council and School Board release their respective meeting calendars in preparation for adopting the following year's operating budgets and warrant articles. This lengthy process includes each body holding a series of budget workshops and public hearings between now and next February.

The general public is invited to attend these meetings in person or watch them on local cable. Your independently-elected budget committee will also be participating throughout the entire process. The budget committee has a unique third-party vantage point, as it is allowed to review both the town and school district's proposed spending plans and offer advisory recommendations during the process.

While the committee's charter is to ensure that taxpayer dollars are efficiently used to fund services and infrastructure in a cost-effective manner, taxpayers should understand that the budgets and articles presented at Town Meeting each year are the responsibility of the Town Council and School Board. More important than that, the taxpayers that show up to vote in March ultimately decide whether any of these budget items actually pass or not. That's right folks | in the end, what the town & school district spends each year is really all up to you.

I would personally encourage every taxpayer to attend or watch as many of the budget workshops and public hearings as you can. Receiving input and feedback from the public during the budget process is a valuable sounding board for all of your elected officials. Please take the opportunity to actively participate in the budget process this year. It's open and available to you as a taxpayer.

The budget meeting calendar for the Town Council can be found on the town Web site at The School Board calendar is located on
